Massimo Giacon was born in Padua in 1961. Since 1980, he has been working in Milan, balancing his various roles as a cartoonist, illustrator, designer, artist, and musician. From the early 1980s, he was a key figure in the renewal of Italian comics sparked by magazines such as Linus, Frigidaire, Alter, Dolce Vita, continuing with Cyborg, Nova Express, Black, Blue. In 1985, he began collaborating with the architecture firm Sottsass Associati, furthering his work in design with collaborations with Matteo Thun, Studio Mendini, Sieger Design, and projects for Olivetti, Memphis, Artemide, Alessi, Swatch, Philips, Ritzenhoff, Telecom. In 1990, he started an artistic activity that led to numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, America, Greece, Russia, and Germany. In 1994, he began working on graphics for telematic networks, websites, and CD-ROMs. After a decade of art-rock music activity—initially with Spirocheta Pergoli and later with I Nipoti del Faraone—in 1996, he released his first solo album, 'Horror Vacui,' followed by a second in 2003, 'Nella città Ideale.'
He performed for many years, subsequently with the formation Massimo Giacon and the Blass. He designed tapestries, carpets, ceramics, kitchen objects, produced advertising illustrations, collaborated with stylists and fashion magazines (Romeo Gigli, Elle, Glamour), created setups for international exhibitions, and animations for television. Since 2014, he has been designing for Superego. He teaches in Milan at the European Institute of Design. He has published several books and graphic novels, including MecanoStorie (1985), Rattletown (1994), and Boy Rocket (2009, scripted by Mimì Colucci), Amami (2007), and the World As It Is (2014), with the Strega Prize-winning writer Tiziano Scarpa. He collaborated with comedian Daniele Luttazzi on the graphic novel La quarta necessità (2011). He wrote and illustrated a book on Ettore Sottsass (2015), which was nominated for the Compasso d’Oro in 2018. In 2018, he wrote and illustrated the book on the history of TV series, And It’s Immediately a Series.
He has been collaborating with Alessi since the mid-1980s, and continues to work with them on designing a successful collection of Christmas objects. Since 2006, he has been collaborating with Superego Editions on various projects, including a ceramics collection called The Pop Will Eat Himself Collection.
He is currently continuing his work in design and his artistic-performance activities in Italy and around the world.
