Dimension: Height 37 cm (14.56 inches) with metal stand 58 cm (22.83 inches)

20th century

Guere masks from Côte d'Ivoire are worn by sorcerers during ceremonies or to frighten their enemies in war. The Guere share many cultural aspects with their neighboring Dan. They created masks used in celebrations, funerals, rituals, wars, and so on, which look quite scary and monstrous. The art of the Guere is stylistically connected to that of the Dan, and both groups are often collectively referred to as 'We', meaning 'Men who forgive easily'.
Like the Dan, the Guere use a variety of masks that play an important regulatory role in their small, egalitarian communities. Masks are owned by families and are used by individual members in connection with social control and the circumcision of boys.
