Les Vins de Gala by Salvador Dalí, Salvador Domenech & Philippe Hyacinthe, first edition published in 1977 by Draeger Vilo Paris, French hardback with jacket, 293 pages, in Excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Original edition from 1977 published by Draeger.
The work blends Dalí's surrealist and personal universe with the theme of wine and oenology, making it an oenophile and artistic guide.
It is structured into two main parts:
'The Ten Wines of the Divine' — a selection of ten important wines or wine regions (Bordeaux, Romanée-Conti, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Jerez, etc.), discussed from the perspective of tradition, wine prestige, and symbolism.
The Ten Wines of Gala — an emotional and dreamlike classification, truly Dalinian: the wines are ranked not according to their origin or grape variety, but based on the sensations, atmospheres, and feelings they evoke (joy, pleasure, light, aesthetics, etc.).
Throughout the pages, the book also offers reflections and speeches on wine as an 'elixir,' a metaphor for art, desire, and sentiment — the idea being that wine becomes an aesthetic, mystical, or even spiritual vehicle, under the pen and brush of Dalí.
The illustrations are extravagant, provocative, and typical of Dalí's surrealist style: reimagined still lifes, transformed nudes, symbolic motifs—often infused with references to religious, mythological, or mystical iconography.
Exceptional iconography: the richness of the color and black & white illustrations, combined with Dalí's offbeat vision, makes it a visually remarkable book, a beautiful object for bibliophiles.
- Archive stone on the universe of Dalí & Gala: as a text / work published by the artist himself in the 1970s, the book testifies to Dalí's late period, his relationship with wine, luxury, eroticism, and symbolism — it is a historical and artistic document.
