A stunning 45 cm Faenza maiolica plate from ca. 1900–1910, Italian in origin with cobalt blue and gold decor, featuring a central portrait of Renaissance noblewoman Cassandra Pavoni and weighing about 3 kg in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Magnificent decorative Renaissance-style maiolica parade plate, Italian production from Faenza in the early 20th century, featuring Renaissance portraits inspired by 15th and 16th-century paintings. The plate displays a rich, intricate decoration of grotesques and foliate scrolls, in cobalt blue and gold enamel. At the center, an oval medallion frames the profile portrait of a Renaissance noblewoman, with a hairstyle and headdress typical of the period. As indicated on the back of the plate (Cassandra Faenza), it depicts Cassandra Pavoni, a historical figure linked to the city of Faenza in the 15th century. The love story between Cassandra and Galeotto Manfredi, lord of Faenza, is a legend that inspired the iconic decorations of Faenza ceramics, such as the peacock eye motif, which gave rise to the term 'Pavona' ceramics. The finish is a metallic gloss (gold), indicating that the plate was intended for decoration, such as a wall plate or centerpiece. This is a stunning piece, of very large size (45 cm diameter), in excellent condition and of great value.
