Description from the seller
Antique Silver Box Engraved with Burin – Europe, Mid-19th Century – Landscape Motifs and Rococo Ornamentation
I present an exquisite antique silver box, crafted with a fine engraving by burin, made in Europe around the mid-19th century. Its contoured and wavy shape, along with its meticulously executed decoration, place it within the late Rococo / early Neoclassical style, highly valued by collectors of antique silverware.
Artistic and technical description
The box displays an exceptionally fine engraving work, completely handmade, with multiple layers of parallel lines, dotting, and shading that create depth and detail.
Front face
Large central oval cartridge with a European architectural landscape.
Bell tower, houses with gabled roofs, fortified buildings, and mountains in the background.
Landscape worked with very fine horizontal strokes (manual guilloché), characteristic of 19th-century artisan workshops.
Peripheral ornamentation with scrolls, leaves, and C-shaped motifs typical of rococo, combined with wavy engraved textures.
Posterior face
Symmetrical design of volutes, flowers, and striped fields.
Plain central plaque, likely intended for initials of the original owner.
High-quality engraving work, with fluid and controlled lines.
Style and origin
According to the morphology of the piece, the type of engraving, and the architectural motifs, the case can be attributed to:
European silverware (possibly France, Germany, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire).
Estimated date: 1840–1880.
The engraving technique, extremely precise, suggests a specialized workshop, possibly in luxury jewelry or silverware.
Condition of preservation
Silver with an aged patina that has been consolidated, not overly cleaned.
Sharp and deep engravings, without significant wear.
Small marks and signs of use typical of aging.
Overall, the piece is in excellent condition for its age, with an authentic aesthetic.
75 x 20 x 55mm
Weight 23 grams
