Tattoo stamp of the Dayak Iban Aso motif, carved from teak wood, Indonesia, late 20th century, sold with stand, in good condition; dimensions 11 cm high × 7 cm wide × 3 cm deep (17 cm high on stand), weight 130 g.
Description from the seller
The art of tattooing is highly developed among the Dayak Tribes. They tattoo their bodies, arms, fingers, feet, and thighs. Additionally, some Dayak men have tattoos on their throats as a symbol of courage. The designs are first carved onto a wooden block and then stamped onto the skin, finely pricked or tattooed with a needle and painted. Tattoos serve as magical protection to ward off evil spirits, as symbols of masculinity, success in warfare, combat identification, and social status. Both men and women have tattoos, especially among the aristocrats.
This unique piece of tattoo stamp/block is crafted from one piece of wood. It shows one of the most famous traditional Aso motifs of the Dayak.
Although this piece shows signs of use (minor losses, surface drying cracks, and one native wood repair), it features fantastically rich incised decoration. Its honey-colored patina, indicating its considerable age, combined with its elegant design, makes it an ethnographic object of great interest.
