Set of two Danish Modern Chess Mills pepper grinders in Brazilian palissander, designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard for Dansk Design, dating from ca. 1960–1975, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Set of 2 Danish Modern 'Chess Rook' grinders – rosewood – designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard (IHQ) for Dansk Designs, circa 1960–1975.
Beautiful vintage Danish salt and pepper mills in the shape of chess towers, an iconic design by Jens Harald Quistgaard (IHQ), the chief designer of Dansk Designs. This duo is crafted from exceptionally beautiful Brazilian rosewood, recognizable by its deep red grain, warm color variations, and the characteristic graphic wood pattern that makes this tropical wood so beloved.
In the 1960s, Quistgaard designed a complete series of 'Chess Mills,' but the tower models made of palisander are among the most sought-after versions. Both collectors of Dansk Designs and enthusiasts of Scandinavian Modern increasingly find these pieces rare, partly due to export restrictions on palisander wood.
The design is sleek and sculptural: a sturdy conical base, horizontal groove lines, and the characteristic cutouts at the top that reference the tower of the chess piece. A beautiful example of functional and decorative Danish design in perfect balance.
Dimensions: H 10.6cm x Ø 6.0cm
Total weight: 306 grams
Both objects are in excellent preserved condition and have been cleaned. They are securely packed with smart shipping, sent via registered mail, and insured.
