A characteristic of this mineral is the phenomenon of labradorescence, caused by the lamellar nature of the mineral's structure, parallel to the less perfect cleavage direction, on which light interacts with specific reflection and absorption effects. This manifests on an opaque, gray background, more or less dark, with splendid shiny, metallic reflections of intense blue, red, green, yellow, and brown colors. The beautiful play of colors is highlighted when observing the cleavage surface of the labradorite in a particular direction. Slight movements of the stone cause the reflections to appear or disappear suddenly, or change color as soon as movement is attempted; thus, it occurs only under certain light incidence. The various shades in the color changes are also linked to the presence of inclusions, regularly arranged within the mineral, of ilmenite, iron, titanite, and magnetite. It is a highly valued and beautiful ornamental and decorative material, and its worth is closely related to the degree of labradorescence exhibited by the mineral. In very beautiful specimens (relatively rare), the value is quite high.
Important deposits are located along the coasts of Labrador, where they are found in large specimens, in Madagascar, Finland, and Sweden.
