Description from the seller

Old hand-carved wooden traditional Balinese calendar based on the Pawukon cycle. The Pawukon ritual calendar was used to determine auspicious days for fertility and also to identify ceremonial events and horoscopes. Originally from Lombok, it was used in Bali, Indonesia, in the mid-19th century. The wonderfully aged patina of the old hardwood reflects the item's antiquity well. This Pawukon calendar contains no letters but geometric figures such as dots, triangles, lines, and circles that symbolize the different auspicious days.

The Pawukon calendar is one of the two calendar systems used by the Balinese. It consists of 210 days instead of the usual 365, and is made up of ten weekly cycles that occur simultaneously. Each weekly cycle has a different number of days, and when the first or last days of different cycles coincide, it is considered a special day.
