Oil painting on hardboard by v. Hees from 1973, titled Clowns / Harlequin, in Expressionism with neo-Cubist influences, signed and sold with a frame and in original edition, 77 cm high and 57 cm wide.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful, colorful, and abstract oil painting depicting clowns/harlequins by v. Hees from 1973, signed and framed.
The style
Neo-Cubism & Expressionism: The picture shows clear influences of Cubism (the decomposition of faces into geometric shapes) mixed with expressionist colors.
Cloisonnismus: The thick, black outlines that separate the color fields resemble church windows (stained glass) or enamel art. This is a stylistic device that gives the picture structure and weight.
• Influence of Bernard Buffet: In the 1950s and 1960s, the French painter Bernard Buffet made the melancholic clown with harsh black lines famous worldwide. 'v. Hees' adopts this trend but interprets it in a more colorful and somewhat happier or grotesque manner.
The motif features Harlequins or clowns. In the 1970s, this was one of the most popular motifs for wall pictures overall. It represents masquerade, theater, and human emotions.
The technology
The craftsmanship of the image is very specifically handcrafted.
Spatula technique: When looking at the application of color, it becomes evident that it was not primarily done with a brush, but mainly with a palette knife or spatula. The color areas are smoothly applied, 'blocky,' and have sharp edges.
Impasto: The paint is applied thickly and pasty. This gives the image an almost relief-like texture. You can see the elevations of the paint, especially on the white areas in the beard and the eyes.
Material: It is likely oil paint (well suited for spatula techniques due to its long drying time) on canvas or hardboard.
Color palette: The colors are typical of the 70s: olive green, ochre, earth tones, combined with cooler blue and violet.
You are bidding on an original time document from the 70s. It is a hand-painted unique piece that reflects the spirit of the era: the fascination with the circus motif, geometric abstraction, and vibrant, earthy colors.
