Description from the seller
We are selling my grandmother's Liebig chromo collection. There are 5 albums, including 1 complete one (containing 50 series of 6 chromos each), and 4 incomplete ones (containing 41, 47, 38, and 38 series respectively). This totals 214 series stored in the albums. Additionally, there are 42 series in duplicate, and 44 other series loose.
There are therefore a total of 300 series (1800 chromosomes, then).
The Liebig Chromos have existed since 1872 and constitute a treasure trove of information (such as was known at the time... and not always politically correct today...) related to history, geography, natural sciences, customs, literature, and more. Each series gathers six images created by renowned artists, with an explanation written on the back by academic specialists. The earliest ones only feature advertisements for Liebig products or cooking recipes (images No. 7 and 9).
One series, bearing the number Sanguinetti S_0372, is incomplete, and another (image No. 5), bearing the number S_0607, consists of four cards in French and two in German.
The series are classified according to their Liebig Company Antwerp numbering (L_xxxx and L_Xxxx), but we also noted their Sanguinetti numbering (S_xxxx). The albums contain series L_X 51 to 100, 101 to 150, 401 to 450, 451 to 500, and 501 to 550. The oldest miscellaneous series (early 20th century?) bear the Sanguinetti numbers S_0528, S_0607, S_0683, S_0712, S_0851, S_0925, S_0946, S_0968, S_1037, and S_1088.
The series dating from the 1920s carry the numbers S_1155, S_1156, S_1158, S_1159 to S_1174, S_1176 to S_1185, S_1187 to S_1189, S_1192, S_1194 to S_1200, S_1202 to S_1234, S_1236 to S_1239, S_1241 to S_1257.
There is a complete inventory of the collection available in xlsx or pdf format, including the 10 different numbering systems contained in the table 'The Liebig conversion table S0001-1871'.
