Embrace
Eikoh Hosoe
Photo Critics/1971/Japanese/380*265*25
Embrace / Embrace (With Leaflet), a photobook by Hideo Hosoe, one of Japan's leading photographers. Through collaborations with artists like his first photobook Man and Woman with Tatsumi Hijikata and The Punishment of Roses with author Yukio Mishima, Hosoe pursued the profound issues of “life” and “sex” lurking within humanity, dedicating himself to free and experimental photographic expression. His conceptual style and works incorporating Japanese elements are credited with helping establish postwar Japanese photography on the global stage. This book is a representative work by Hideo Hosoe, originally published in 1971. The following is an excerpt from the photographer's afterword: "Ten years have passed without me truly grasping the strength and tenderness of ‘Embrace’. 'Rose Punishment' is a pact with the unknown, ‘Kamaitachi’ is a pact with memory—in other words, pacts with the other within myself. The reason I couldn't fulfill the ‘Embrace’ pact with myself for ten years was that I couldn't surpass Bill Brand's ‘Nude’. Now, I believe I have surpassed it."
