In 1933, the then Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) commissioned AEG to build the Baureihe E 18, aiming to accommodate the growing train traffic between Berlin and Munich. The already existing E 04 had proven its capabilities and could reach speeds of 150 km/h. The E 18 was therefore equipped with the same chassis and engine as the E 04. During test runs between Munich and Augsburg, the first E 18 reached a top speed of 165 km/h.
The above result prompted the DRG to commission AEG to produce a series of these locomotives. The first locomotive of this new series - the E 18 01 - was delivered to the DRG in 1935. In 1937, the E 18 22 was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris. The locomotive won the Grand Prix award. The Austrian Federal Railways ordered eight of these locomotives in the same year. Up until 1940, 53 locomotives of the E 18 series were put into service by the DRG. After that, construction was halted during the war years. It was not until 1984 that the last locomotive of the Baureihe 118 was retired by the DB.
