Two uncompleted bronze or brass clothfasteners dating to the 15th–16th century post‑medieval period, with left piece 61 × 23 mm and right piece 57 × 23 mm, acquired in 2024 from Antiekmarkt in the Netherlands, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
These are antique clothes hooks (semi-finished products), made of bronze or brass and dating from the post-medieval period (15th/16th century)
Details about the object
Material: Made of a copper alloy, such as bronze or brass. These semi-finished clothes hooks come directly from the mold and are therefore only cast and require finishing. The casting residue must be removed, and the hook must be bent, after which it will likely be polished. Both unfinished clothes hooks were found at the same location and are very rare in this condition.
Function: This type of hook was used as a closure for garments, often in combination with an eyelet, or as a connection between different garments.
Style and dating: The decorative, cast style is consistent with archaeological finds from the period 1400 to 1600, an era known for such decorated clothing accessories.
Context: Such objects are often found in the ground and are part of historical and archaeological collections.
Dimension:
Left: 61 x 23 mm
Right: 57 x 23 mm
Shipping method: this lot will be excellently packaged and shipped via DHL through Catawiki's smart shipping.
