The Class 181.2 is an electric locomotive intended for passenger transport of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB).
To minimize the time-consuming process of changing locomotives when crossing national borders, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) decided to build several experimental locomotives capable of operating under different overhead line voltages. This locomotive type was equipped for dual voltage operation in Germany, Luxembourg, and France. The electrification of the Moselle line between Koblenz and Trier in 1973, connecting via Wasserbillig to Luxembourg and via Apach to Thionville, resulted in a significant increase in the number of locomotives. Road number 181 206 is now owned by the DB Museum Koblenz.
