Set of four polychrome earthenware tiles with tin glaze forming a four‑pass design of fruits and palmettes, colors blue, yellow, green, orange and manganese, from the Netherlands (Holland/Friesland), ca. 1600–1620; each tile about 13 × 13 cm and 2 cm deep, total weight 1954 g, condition reasonable with edge chips and glaze loss.
Description from the seller
Very fine and early 17th-century set of four polychrome tiles forming a quatrefoil. The decoration consists of fruits (oranges), marigolds, acanthus leaves, and palmettes, executed in vivid colors: blue, yellow, green, orange, and manganese. This type of composition is characteristic of the period circa 1600–1620 and is documented in:
Jan Pluis, The Dutch Tile 1570–1930, compare no. 171, where an almost identical quatrefoil field is depicted.
The tiles display the characteristic deep blue corner field in a reserve technique, typical of the early blooming phase of Dutch polychrome tile production.
Condition
The condition is okay for the age.
Some edge chips and glaze loss (see photos).
A few larger chips on one tile.
Glaze with authentic craquelé
Back sides with remnants of old mortar.
Not museum-worthy, but still an attractive and decorative set over 400 years old.
Note: the photos are part of the description.
