Description from the seller
A Beautiful Gandhara Stucco Head of Buddha, 3rd Century - 5th Century AD
Pakistan
H6.5×W4.6×D4.1 cm (H10.6 cm with stand)
This finely modelled stucco head depicts the serene features of the Buddha, characteristic of the Gandharan artistic tradition. The softly contoured face, downcast eyes, and gently smiling lips convey a profound sense of calm and spiritual introspection. The textured curls of the hair remain partially preserved, adding depth and volume to the sculpture despite areas of age-related loss.
Executed in light, mineral-rich stucco, the surface shows an appealing, time-worn patina with natural encrustations that reflect centuries of burial. The reverse is unfinished and retains traces of the original mounting technique. Mounted on a custom stand, this elegant fragment presents a refined example of Gandharan Buddhist art, notable for its gentle expression and enduring presence.
Provenance:
Acquired from a private collection in 1982, Paris
The photo of proof of origin and certificate of authenticity will be provided via email.
Condition:
Overall in good condition. Some abrasion caused by age. Possible loss of the left ear. Overall surface is covered with soil. No restoration.
Shipping worldwide by EMS, usually 14-21 days to deliver.
The photo of proof of origin and certificate of authenticity will be provided via email.
