Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 664 – 332 BC

Osiris was one of the most important gods in Ancient Egypt, associated with resurrection, fertility, and life after death. According to Egyptian mythology, Osiris was the first mythical pharaoh of Egypt, a wise and just king who taught humanity agriculture, laws, and civilization. However, his brother Seth, driven by envy, betrayed him, murdered him, and dismembered his body. His wife and sister, the goddess Isis, managed to gather and restore his remains with the help of magic, temporarily bringing him back to life. From this union, Horus was born, who would later avenge his father.
After his resurrection, Osiris became the lord of the Duat, the realm of the dead, where he ruled as judge of souls. In this role, Osiris presided over the final judgment, where the heart of the deceased was weighed on a scale against the feather of Maat, goddess of truth. If the heart was pure, the soul could live eternally.
Osiris was depicted as a mummified man with green or black skin, symbolizing renewal and fertility, and carrying the scepter and flail. His cult spread throughout Egypt, symbolizing the hope of eternal life.
