Description from the seller
A restrung necklace of spherical mammoth bone beads slightly increasing in size towards the centre. Each bead has been made to show the many variations of colour, texture and pattern upon the bone, such as striking mottled finishes. The beads range in hue from dark, yellow ochre, dusky grey and creamy white. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor chipping, surface roughness, and scratches. Some beads feature minor holes. The necklace has been finished with a modern gold-plated clasp. (Please note it has not been professionally tied.)
The Devensian period is the term given to the last extensive glacial period that covered the Earth by British geologists. Geologists from other countries label the glacial period differently. Devensian derives its name from the Latin ‘Devenses’, translated as ‘those living by the Dee’. The Dee is a river in Northern Wales where earthly deposits from the glacial period are particularly evident.
Measurements: (circa) Half-length 30cm
Provenance: From a London based collection.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.*
