Background information on the SIGNED photobook 'Daido Moriyama - Kagero & Colors'.
Daido MORIYAMA studied design and subsequently photography at Kōb. In 1961, he joined the group VIVO in Tokyo — with photographers Kikuji KAWADA, Ikkō NARAHARA, Shōmei TOMATSU, Eikō HOSOE, Akira SATO, and Akira TANNO — which soon disbanded. After working as an assistant for Eikō HOSOE, he became independent in 1964; his first photo book, 'Japan, a Theater,' was published in 1968. Between 1968 and 1970, he was significantly involved in the photo fanzine 'Provoke.' Today, he is regarded as one of the important Japanese photographers of the second half of the 20th century, whose work has played a key role in establishing Japanese photography internationally.
Content of the photobook 'Kagero & Colors' that is no longer available from the publisher.
This text-free, large-format collection of borderless color and black-and-white photographs combines numerous previously unpublished nude images in color with pictures from a previous work by Daido Moriyama, the extremely rare fourth solo publication 'Kagero' from 1972.
The prominent Japanese photographer Daido MORIYAMA captures the elements of bondage and nudity with a method he describes as 'Samurai tenderness' — a mood of intimacy and at the same time distance — as if the artist had taken the photographs against his will.
The photographed stagings are unconventional. They appear hurried, immediate, and mysteriously instinctive. Even the knots seem hastily tied.
Each of the 60 photographs gathered here suggests that something has happened or will happen – something intense, resonant, or eagerly awaited. There are no smiling models, no boasts of romantic conquests, rarely even a face, and certainly no hint of playfulness. Instead, this is a collection of longings.
PowerShovelBooks, Japan, 2007. First and only edition, few of which are SIGNED by the author.
Hardcover without dust jacket (as issued). 370 x 265 mm. 116 pages with 60 photographs, 80% in color and 20% in black and white. No text.
Condition: The book is in very good condition both inside and outside, with only a very slight scuff on the top edge of the back cover. On the flyleaf by Daido MORIYAMA, boldly signed with black felt-tip pen!
