Dyoboli Koun Mask

Hardwood mask with copper alloy sheets featuring pinprick details, and three copper alloy fringes wrapped with red fiber tassels hanging in front of the face, with a pair of carved animal horns rising from the forehead. There are minor tears and signs of wear on the metal sheet, along with chips and age cracks on the horns. Black resin is visible at the edges of the metal sheet. Marka masks are associated with antelopes and are used in ceremonies for farming, fishing, and agricultural events.

NYC collection, purportedly ex. Merton Simpson, New York.
