A dark and disturbing photographic investigation into the hidden face of prostitution and the people and bodies that inhabit this universe. In his accompanying text, Philippe Azoury concisely captures the atmosphere conveyed by these images: 'In the obscure darkness where flesh, words, and thought disappear into a marsh of decay, deviance and excess seem to have given them a particular awareness of what it means to exist. D'Agata's impressionist and romantic style—very different from most of his Magnum colleagues—might seem to contradict this feeling of urgency and despair, but in reality, it enhances the impression of hedonism consumed by need and sadness. It is a sexuality accompanied by intense anxiety, in a book of intense, tense, and nervous poetry.
