AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Five very elegant volumes, all exceptionally signed on the title page by Pepi Merisio (1931 - 2021). Unavailable in signed copies. Each volume contains 20 color photographic plates, totaling 80, which are inserted into a double sheet of white cardboard (bristol) with a window and captions for the photographs at the bottom of the page (see one of the last photos). Black cloth binding.

Pepi Merisio's photographic work inspired the film L’Arbre au sabot by Ermanno Olmi, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978. In the 1960s, Pepi Merisio quickly gained significant international recognition, and his work was praised by the illustrious Ferdinando Scianna of the Magnum agency (see below). The photographic plates depict landscapes from various regions of Italy and scenes of life at work and in daily life, imbued with a strong sense of religiosity. The last volume is dedicated to photographic reproductions of ex-votos and popular sculptures, painted and especially nativity scenes.

Pepi Merisio (1931 – 2021), an independent photographer, spent almost his entire life in the territory of Bergamo, which he explored extensively, traversing all its plains and valleys as well as the high mountain villages before covering the entire Italian territory. He quickly gained significant international recognition, as in July 1966, the Swiss magazine Camera, published in Lucerne in French, dedicated an important feature to him. Roméo Martinez, a photography historian whose library at the European House of Photography bears his name, introduced him into the collection Les Grands photographes. Pepi Merisio also signed, with Gianni Berengo Gardin—who considered him a brother in photography—the volume on Latium in the collection of the Touring Club of Italy.

The illustrious Ferdinando Scianna declared in 2021 upon the death of Pepi Mérisio: "I met Pepi in 1967 when I had just arrived from Sicily, and he already had great international prestige." "He had just won an international award with the report on the death of Zio Angelo, many people gravitated around him, and I had great admiration... He had chosen his visual relationship with the world, the world he wanted to talk about, and the way he wanted to do it... He had a more than direct political-cultural engagement... He was a great anthropologist of the peasant world. His archives are a cultural treasure that we will continue to need to understand where we come from and where we are going, if we are going anywhere at all."
