Description from the seller
Standing icon of Christ Pantocrator.
Russian school, second half of the 19th century (ca. 1850–1900)
It is only shipped to European countries.
Provenance: Private collection.
Region: Russia.
Period: Second half of the 19th century (ca. 1850–1900).
Tempera on wooden panel with stucco
Style: Russian Orthodox iconography.
Russian icon of Christ Pantocrator depicted standing, executed in egg tempera on a panel with traditional stucco preparation. Christ appears frontal, blessing with the right hand and holding the open Gospel with the left, following the Orthodox canon. The Slavic abbreviations 'IC' and 'XC' are preserved, along with the Gospel text in the book, characteristic of 19th-century Russian workshops. The palette, with ochre tones, bluish grays, and earthy reds, reflects the Russian provincial aesthetic of the mid- to late 19th century, with a firm drawing and gentle draping that combines tradition with a slight naturalism typical of the period.
The background shows fine vertical crackle and uniform oxidation, while the panel displays signs of authentic aging: manual cuts, stucco wear, and natural darkening. The icon retains its original devotional presence, probably intended for domestic or small worship spaces. Condition is good for its age, with stable crackle, slight edge losses, and deep patina.
Measurements: 40.5 × 26.5 × 2.5 cm
