Empire-style psyché in solid mahogany dating from the 19th century.
Description from the seller
Psyche Empire period, 19th century
Made of mahogany, with a mercury mirror
Dimensions: 47 cm (height) × 43 cm (width) × 24 cm (depth)
Period: First Empire, around 1810
Detailed description.
This refined table mirror is a perfect example of the Empire style, which emerged during the reign of Napoleon I, blending neoclassical rigor, antique inspirations, and the nobility of materials. Crafted from solid mahogany, it displays a beautiful, warm, and deep antique patina.
The whole piece rests on four small, discreet but elegant turned feet, which slightly elevate the piece. It has a central drawer adorned with a knob in the shape of a lion's head holding a gilded brass ring — a motif typical of imperial symbolism, evoking strength and majesty.
Mirror and structure
The original mercury mirror retains its soft reflections, slightly mottled by time, which attests to its authenticity. It is framed in a tilting structure, held by two tapered mahogany side supports, terminating in ebonized wood busts inspired by antiquity.
Women's heads with antique hairstyles not only form a decorative element, but also a symbol of wisdom and permanence, very fashionable in the decorative arts of the time.
Stylistic interpretation
This cheval mirror is not merely a utilitarian piece of furniture: it reflects an era when furniture served to assert the power and culture of its owners. Its formal simplicity, combined with the richness of the materials and the quality of its craftsmanship, makes it a precious, decorative, and historical piece, ideal for an Empire collection or a classic interior.
