Ancient Roman bronze ring with a D-shaped hoop and a flat square bezel engraved with a diagonal cross inside a square frame; internal diameter 1.7 cm (closest UK ring size J), in good condition, acquired in 2010 from the UK antique market with provenance from a private collection dating to 2000.
Description from the seller
A fine ancient Roman bronze ring featuring a simple D-shape hoop with a flat square bezel at the front. The bezel has been engraved with a diagonal cross within a square frame. Earthly encrustations and patination to the surface, alongside scratches and wear consistent with age.
As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth. Following the spread of the Roman Empire, Roman jewellery became more and more elaborate in the designs and in the materials used, such as precious and semi-precious gemstones. Roman jewellery reflected the culture the Romans entered in contact with, and testified the prosperity and the power of the Roman Empire. Rings were the most popular pieces of Roman jewellery, usually embellished with fine carving.
