Description from the seller
The light of Sasso di Castro – datolite from Firenzuola
This refined specimen, originating from Sasso di Castro, Firenzuola (FI), in Tuscany, represents one of the most elegant expressions of the species in the region. The piece weighs 956 grams and measures 132 × 105 × 75 mm, important dimensions that highlight its collectible character and visual impact.
The specimen features a compact druse of datolite, with well-developed glassy crystals on the matrix. The clean facets and transparency ranging from translucent to almost transparent enhance the natural brilliance; the texture is uniform, and the orderly growth highlights the crystal architecture of the specimen.
From a genetic point of view, datolite formed in low- to medium-temperature hydrothermal cavities within the Apennine ophiolitic context, where solutions enriched in boron favored the precipitation of the species on fractures and vesicles of the host rocks.
Particularity: the sample also hosts a small calcite, initially indistinguishable from datolite under normal light. However, under ultraviolet light, it reveals a spectacular blue-celestial emission, intense and persistent: it is both fluorescent and phosphorescent. A 'blue gem' hidden among the crystals, capable of transforming the piece into a scenographic specimen for UV-themed collections.
Kire Minerals is proud to present 'The Light of Sasso di Castro,' selected and studied by Erik Lombini with the usual passion and expertise. Every detail of this piece tells the story of the beauty and strength of the mineralogy of the Tuscan Apennines.
