Juan III Ducas (Vatatzés), Emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. Hyperpyron (gold, 25 mm, 4.37 g, 6 h), Magnesia, 1232-1254 (?). Christ, nimbate, seated frontally on the throne, wearing a tunic and pallium, raising the right hand in a gesture of blessing and holding the Gospel in the left. Reverend Juan III, standing, facing left, with division and loros, holding an annexikakia in the left hand and a labarum in the right, crowned by the Virgin Mary, nimbate, standing frontally to the right; traces of legend on the left and right. DOC 6. SB 2073.
