Description from the seller
Giant Calcite from Riolo Terme – Superfluorescent and Phosphorescent
This 1300-gram lot brings together five monumental samples of calcite from a surprising and still scientifically undocumented location: Riolo Terme, Ravenna, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Such an out-of-scale discovery – in terms of size and intensity – had never been seen before in the Italian mineralogical landscape.
The crystals, of impressive size, present elongated and angular shapes, often arranged like small crystalline trees, a structure that captures and multiplies the effect of ultraviolet light in a spectacular way. As soon as they are exposed to short-wave UV, they explode into a vivid green-yellow fluorescence, among the most intense ever observed, with a prolonged phosphorescence that remains visible to the naked eye for dozens of seconds even after the lamp is turned off.
This luminous persistence is due to the particular chemical and crystalline composition of these calcites: a combination of lattice defects and natural activating impurities, probably related to the presence of Mn²⁺ ions, which enhance the mineral's ability to store energy and release it slowly in the form of light.
What makes this lot even more special is its geological uniqueness: there are no publications, articles, or scientific references that attest to this location as a site of photoreactive calcites. This not only exponentially increases its collectible value but also transforms these samples into true testimonies from pioneers, ideal for those who want to own a piece of Italian mineralogical history in real time.
Kire Minerals is proud to present these luminous giants, the result of research, effort, and passion in the field. An unrepeatable batch, destined for collectors who recognize the authenticity, rarity, and magic of true fluorescence.
