Background information on the SIGNED photobook 'Daido Moriyama. Another Country in New York, facsimile from 2013.'
About the prominent Japanese photographer (*1938)
Daido MORIYAMA studied design and subsequently photography at Kōb. In 1961, he joined the group VIVO in Tokyo — with photographers Kikuji KAWADA, Ikkō NARAHARA, Shōmei TOMATSU, Eikō HOSOE, Akira SATO, and Akira TANNO — which soon disbanded. After working as an assistant for Eikō HOSOE, he became independent in 1964; his first photo book, 'Japan, a Theater,' was published in 1968. Between 1968 and 1970, he was significantly involved in the photo fanzine 'Provoke.' Today, he is regarded as one of the important Japanese photographers of the second half of the 20th century, whose work has played a key role in establishing Japanese photography internationally.
Personal statement of the photographer (freely translated from Andreas Stuhlmann's English text into German)
Another country
New York is a city I really like – maybe even a little more than Tokyo.
I have only been there once, but for me, New York is not just a place somewhere in the world – for me, New York is the world itself. It is undoubtedly a melting pot of people, concrete, steel, and glass, but at the same time, it is filled with an indefinable kind of tenderness and sadness. This tenderness and sadness linger in me in a very special way, which is why I sometimes think of the lights of New York as one might rave about a loved one. Since I have a panic disorder when flying, I unfortunately cannot simply get on a plane and fly to New York whenever I feel like it. During my last visit, I took 1,500 photos with my half-format camera, most of which remained unseen and gathering dust in a closet. It seemed to me that I would like to collect them in an album, like a love photo album, and when the Shimizu Gallery offered to provide the frame for producing this album, my dream finally came true. I keep thinking: if Tokyo, the place on this side that is so close yet so disturbingly far, is my homeland, then New York is a distant but familiar place on the other side, or in other words, another country.
Content of the photo book 'Another Country in New York' (1974, 2013)
Facsimile of the groundbreaking artist's book 'Another Country in New York', which the prominent Japanese photographer Daido MORIYAMA published himself in 1974, based on works from his brief trip to New York in 1971 — his first trip abroad.
The motifs of the black-and-white photographs in the volume 'Another Country in New York' directly capture life on the streets and in hotel rooms, filtered solely through his perspective, in the characteristic style of Daido MORIYAMA: grainy, high contrast, and from sometimes unusual perspectives.
The band 'Another Country in New York' also breathes the freshness and spontaneity of the first moment as a facsimile.
Back then, Daido MORYIAMA rented a copier and set it up in a Tokyo retail space. Customers could line up there to create custom-bound books—with varying sequences of image pages and two alternative screen-printed covers.
This principle was also used in the facsimile edition offered here: the pages — which look as if they were just spit out by a copier — were assembled in random order and then stapled together. Therefore, the order of the inner pages describing this offer differs from that of the edition offered here itself, but all the photos are present! The cover reproduces the screen printing design of the original cover.
The 2013 facsimile edition was published with two cover motifs - a) 'Stars & Stripes' and b) 'Airplane' (silver-glossy with green lettering) in 250 copies each. The Japanese text was translated into English by Andreas Stuhlmann on behalf of the publisher and is included as an insert with the facsimile edition.
Akio Nagasawa, Japan, 2013. First and only reissue, numbered (#58 of 250), and signed by the author.
Hardcover without dust jacket (as published). 315 x 215 mm. 90 pages with over 60 black-and-white photographs. No text.
Condition: The book is in very good condition both inside and out, with a slight crease on the top edge of the cover. Signed by Daido MORIYAMA with a graphite pencil, with 'Daido' SIGNED!
