Detailed copper line engraved map of the Netherlands by Janvier. The present map was published in Paris by Lattre, circa 1772. Attractive cartouche.
Measures approx. 310 x 440 mm. Very good condition,see photos. .
Original outline hand colour with a later wash on the cartouche..

ROBERT JANVIER
Jean Janvier (1746 – 1776) who worked in the latter eighteenth century produced a series of maps. While there is some confusion about his Christian name, Robert or Jean, his maps usually were inscribed “Le Sieur Janvier”. He is renowned for his collaboration with engraver Jean Lattre for the Atlas Moderne first released in 1762 and in several later editions some by C. F. Delamarche and by Chez Remondini. During his career Janvier was accorded the title "Geographe avec Privilege du Roi". He also produced several maps used in general atlases by William Fadan and P. Santini.
JEAN LATTRE
Jean Lattre ( 170? - 178?) was based in Paris at 20 rue Saint Jacques, a bookseller, engraver, calligrapher, globe maker and map publisher, publishing a larger body of cartographic interest with many notable French engravers, including Zannoni, Delamarche, Janvier and Bonne. He also worked with the London based cartographer, William Faden and Santorini. He also was known to sue a fellow Frenchman, Desnos and Santorini for copying his work. Later Lattre moved with his famil to Bordeaux.
