Description from the seller

A beautiful and exquisitely preserved example of an extinct genus of sea lilies, the crinoids, named Scyphocrinus elegans. The crinoids' details are clearly visible. The crinoid measures 20 cm x 8.5 cm. The total size, including the matrix, is 20.4 x 13.8 cm. Crinoids are not plants, as the name "sea lily" suggests. They are, however, animals that filter water with their flower-like structures to extract nutrients. These sea lilies are fossilized on the walls of horizontal caverns. To retrieve these fossils, seekers must descend into these caverns to depths of up to 20 meters. A drill is then used to loosen the plates. The fossil plates are usually retrieved in sections. This specimen has been reassembled in two pieces. The fossil has been treated with a preservative to preserve it. A very beautiful and decorative fossil.
