The Hellenistic-origin work was discovered in 1772 in Centocelle (Rome), which is also its namesake; it is also known as the Eros of Centocelle.
It was purchased by Pope Clement XIV and consequently displayed in the Hall of Busts and Statues of the Vatican Museums, where it is still kept today.
In 1800, for a brief period, the Eros of Centocelle was also exhibited at the Louvre after Napoleon Bonaparte's acquisition from Pope Pius VI as part of the Treaty of Tolentino.
