Description from the seller

An exceptional and very large Deble rhythm pounder made by the Senufo in Cote d'Ivoire. The déblé rhythm pounder is a guardian sculpture from used in important rituals like initiations and funerals. These figures, which can be male or female, are used to pound the ground to a rhythm, which helps invoke ancestral spirits and symbolises fertility and a connection to the departed. The form follows the function perfectly; initiates of the Poro (or Lo) male secret society, performing their fertility dance, held the figures by the upper arms, using them as handles, and pounded their heavy bases on the ground in unison to mark the rhythm.
This is an exceptionally beautiful piece carved as a female figure with a finely carved, intricate coiffure and beautifully formed arms and hands. A piece with a strong, powerful presence.
It has a collection number on the back of the base (unidentified) .

109 cm high with stand
16.5 X 16 cm

Overall good condition with wear consistent with use and cracks from the natural drying process of the wood. A piece that would stand out in any interior or collection
