About the prominent Japanese photographer Daido MORIYAMA (*1938)
Daido MORIYAMA studied design and subsequently photography in Kobe. In 1961, he joined the group VIVO in Tokyo—with photographers Kikuji KAWADA, Ikkō NARAHARA, Shōmei TOMATSU, Eikō HOSOE, Akira SATO, and Akira TANNO—which soon disbanded. After working as an assistant for Eikō HOSOE, he became independent in 1964; his first photo book, 'Japan, a Theater,' was published in 1968. Between 1968 and 1970, he was significantly involved in the photo fanzine 'Provoke.' Today, he is regarded as one of the important Japanese photographers of the second half of the 20th century, whose work has played a key role in establishing Japanese photography on the international stage.
Wherever he was, he took photos of the city life with his small-format camera; his album 'Another Country in New York,' created in 1971, is legendary for containing images from the American metropolis.
A) 'Light and Shadow Magazine' (2013, signed)
During the 'Kasseler Photobook Festival 2013', visitors to the 'DAIDO-Fabrik' created their own 'Light & Shadows Magazine': twelve double-page spreads featuring legendary images from Daido MORIYAMA's masterpiece were available and could be reassembled. The pages of this variable magazine can be rearranged repeatedly, as the publication is not bound but held together by a fabric-covered rubber band.
Kasseler Photo Book Festival, Kassel 2013. First edition (250 copies).
Softcover edition without binding and without dust jacket (as published). 390 x 300 mm. 12 pages with double-sided black-and-white photographs. No text.
Condition: The book is in very good condition both inside and out and has been signed by Daido MORIYAMA with a thick felt-tip pen on the back of the front cover.
B) 'Paris 88/89' (2012, first edition)
The Japanese photographer had at that time the surreal dream of opening a gallery in Paris. Daido MORIYAMA himself described his stay in the French capital as 'ambivalent and floating'.
Content of the photo book 'Paris 88/89'.
The photo book 'Paris 88/89' by the Japanese photographer Daido MORIYAMA contains a total of 21 black-and-white photographs taken by the prominent Japanese photographer during his stay in Paris in the years 1988 and 1989.
The photographs show Moriyama's impressions of Paris and his fascination with the French photographer Eugène ATGET (1857-1927), who around the turn of the century documented old Paris with a bulky large-format camera, systematically cataloging the smallest details of the city.
In addition to the 21 photographs, the book includes the French translation of a chapter from Daido MORIYAMA's Paris memories as well as an interview with Jean-Kenta Gauthier.
Both the first and second editions of the title published in 2012 are sold out, making it a sought-after photo book.
Poursuite Editions, France 2012. First Edition (1,000 copies).
Softcover edition without dust jacket (as published). 210 x 150 mm. 64 pages with 21 mostly double-page black-and-white photographs. Texts only in French.
Condition: The book is in very good condition inside and out, with remnants of a removed price sticker on the back.
