The trains that attract all eyes both in the prototype and in the model are the long full trains. They are usually formed from a single type of wagon. For example, the 'Lange Heinrich', a coal train pulled by powerful steam locomotives of the Baureihe series in the 1970s, is still well remembered. However, there are also cargoes that are very sensitive to moisture and therefore cannot be transported in wagons like the Falns 182 type. Starting in 1982, Talbot built a total of 140 units of a wagon designated Tals 968 for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. They featured a swinging roof that optimally protects the cargo, which was mostly salt for the chemical industry. Visually, the Tals 968 stands out mainly because of its bent roof trusses, which extend the upper part of the wagon body at the end and make it look even more robust. With a tare weight of around 25 tons, the maximum load can be 65 tons. For 24 wagons in the prototype, this would amount to a very substantial load requiring a powerful locomotive. Here, the mighty Baureihe 151 can shine. The swinging roof wagons of the Tals 968 type are not only used in full trains but also in mixed freight trains. Both on the layout and in the display case, they always make a good impression.
Example: four-axle, large-capacity swing roof wagons of the Tals 968 type from the German Federal Railway (DB). Used for transporting moisture-sensitive bulk goods. Brick-red base color. All wagons equipped with two transition platforms. Twelve wagons with handbrake on one transition platform and twelve wagons without a handbrake. Bogies of the 665 type. Operating condition circa 1984.
