Description from the seller
Large Orthoceras & Ammonite Slice – Northwest Sahara, Morocco – 32×24 cm – 3.7 kg – Fossil decorative plaque
Polished in natural state for display.
An impressive, heavy-duty fossil slab with several beautifully visible Orthoceras specimens and some ammonites, originating from the fossil-rich Northwest Sahara region of Morocco. The piece has been professionally prepared, beautifully highlighting the characteristic elongated shells and details of these ancient marine creatures.
Orthoceras are among the earliest known life forms to inhabit our planet. These extinct marine creatures lived hundreds of millions of years ago, primarily during the Ordovician and Silurian periods. They were part of the cephalopods—the same group of animals that includes modern squid and octopuses.
Their name comes from the Greek orthos (straight) and keras (horn), a reference to their long, straight, conical shell. This shell consisted of multiple compartments, separated by partitions and connected by a central siphon. Geological processes such as sedimentation and mineralization fossilized this aragonite material over millions of years, allowing us to admire these beautiful fossils today.
This large piece is both decorative and scientifically interesting, providing a tangible fragment of an ancient marine ecosystem.
