Description from the seller

The knitting chatelaine was worn hanging from the waist, attached to the belt or skirt band, and used whilst knitting.
This necessary little tool allowed the knitter (men, women and children) to knit whilst carrying out their daily chores. They were mostly knitting woolen socks to keep out the cold during the cold winter months. The knitting could be laid aside when necessary by placing the work-in-progress between the two ends of the sheath and fixing the ball of wool onto the hook, thus securing the stitches and keeping the work safe. See last 4 photos.

Many knitting chatelaines were made in Germany, Austria and The Netherlands with many imaginative decorations. This knitting chatelaine was made in Austria and has a decorative skirt-hook showing a cherub in a garland of flowers and leaves. The sheath is decorated on both ends with flower designs and all pieces are joined by an original "Jasseron" silver chain. An unidentified maker's mark "B" can be seen on the cherub hook and "12" = year letter 1847. The chatelaine is in near MINT condition, the sharp details as new. The chatelaine will be an interesting addition to a collection of sewing tools as well as adding a touch of history.

Careful packaging will ensure a safe delivery. See my feedback on Catawiki.
