Description from the seller
Military Post of Vrydenbourg, on the Maroni / View of three Camps of the Wana-Crique (1798)
Double engraving on a single sheet with two views of places in the interior of Suriname: Kamp Vredenburg on the Marowijne River in Suriname (at the border with French Guiana) and camps of escaped slaves at Wana Creek.
The engraving is made by Tardieu (signed) and was published in 1798 in a French edition of the famous book by J.G. Stedman about Suriname.
John Gabriël Stedman (Dendermonde, 1744 – Devonshire, March 5, 1797) was a Scottish-Dutch officer in the Scottish Brigade of the Dutch army. He helped suppress a slave uprising in Suriname. He fell in love with a slave and tried to buy her freedom. He wrote the influential book *Travels to Suriname and through the interior regions of Guiana* about his experiences. In it, he openly expressed concern for the rights of slaves, particularly regarding whether they should be treated as human beings. His account of a story about the murder of a mulatto girl evolved over time into a legend about the slave Alida.
Image 19x14cm, sheet 29x21cm
Good to very good condition. Slight stains and age toning in the margins. Otherwise excellent. Never folded, with spacious margins.
