Set of three silver travel items – Holy water font, papal seal, small silver book (hallmarked)
Set comprising three silver pieces, late 19th – early 20th century:
1. Small wall-mounted holy water font (silver tested)
A repoussé silver holy water font, decorated with an Eye of Providence in radiant glory, flanked by two cherubs. The basin is gadrooned. Continental work, circa 1900.
Silver tested, estimated fineness 800/900‰.
Dimensions: height 10 cm.
2. Small papal seal/stamp (silver tested)
Solid silver seal, shaft decorated with a radiant cross. Base engraved in a medallion: PIVS XII PONTIFEX MAXIMVS (Pontificate 1939–1958). Handcrafted, probably Italy.
Silver tested, estimated fineness 800‰.
Dimensions: 5 cm.
3. Miniature silver book – Henry W. Longfellow (hallmarked)
Solid silver cover plate, portrait of Longfellow in relief, with dates (1807–1882).
English hallmarks:
• W.C = William Comyns, London goldsmith
• Lion Passant = 925 sterling silver
• Date letters “m” (in a quatrefoil cartouche) = London 1907
• Leopard = London hallmark
The interior contains Poetical Works of Longfellow, ed. Eyre & Spottiswoode.
Dimensions: 6 cm.
