Description from the seller
Daum Nancy – Oncidium Orchids Bowl(circa 1900)
This elegant enamel floral bowl is by the Daum Frères, masters of the French Nancy School.
This piece is believed to have been created around 1900, during the Daum workshop's most mature period during the Art Nouveau period.
It features oncidiums (orchids) on a pale milky white glass background.
Each petal and vein is delicately painted, as if shining through the sunlight.
The flowers, swaying in the breeze, are trapped within the amber-colored glass, resembling layers of earth.
This work symbolizes the Daum workshop's poetic philosophy of "capturing a moment of nature forever."
The Daum brothers, along with Émile Gallé, are considered two of the greatest masters of Art Nouveau glass.
The "Nancy School," which flourished in Nancy, eastern France, in the late 19th century, developed a movement that combined art and nature to infuse everyday pottery with poetry.
Their works are imbued with a spirituality that goes beyond realistic depictions of nature, depicting the changes in time, light, and seasons.
The oncidium flowers painted on this pot are not merely decorative, but are expressed as a symbol of the fleeting yet vibrant beauty of flowers.
This piece combines Daum's specialty, cameo glass etching, with enamel.
First, multiple layers of glass are blown onto the piece, and the surface is carved away with acid to bring the pattern to life in three dimensions.
The flowers are then painstakingly painted on top of this with hand-painted enamel.
The shading of the leaf veins and the shading of the petals retain the artisan's brushstrokes, and the color subtly changes from golden brown to pale green depending on the light.
The signature section
features the unique "Daum Nancy + Cross of Lorraine" engraving,
indicating that it was genuinely produced by the Daum workshop.
