Description from the seller
Unique statuette of a bear in obsidian - POP ART - large size
An essential pop art piece for your interior decoration.
Obsidian is a silica-rich mineral primarily found near volcanic areas, whether current or past.
According to Pliny the Elder, the name Obsidian is derived from a character, the Roman Obsius, who is said to have been the first to identify this rock, which he discovered and brought back from Ethiopia. However, another hypothesis is that it takes its name from the Latin 'obsidio', meaning 'siege', due to the conchoidal fracture of the stone.
Obsidian is a very ancient stone, known and used since prehistory, over 8,000 years ago. Prehistoric humans valued obsidian for its sharpness and crafted arrowheads, spears, and axe heads from it.
The very presence of obsidian determined the location of the campsites, as the site would thus provide them with the ability to craft these weapons and hunt.
Later, in the pre-Columbian civilizations of South America, notably in Peru and Egypt, obsidian was used to craft powerful magical objects. Jewelry such as amulets and talismans was intended to ward off demons.
In the Aztec Empire, obsidian was considered a sacred stone. An Aztec legend tells that Pachamama, the Mother goddess, created the moon and stars with obsidian. It was used in powder form to dress wounds and injuries.
Later, black obsidian was even used in medicine to fight viruses, bacteria, and headaches. It was crushed and mixed with water to prepare an obsidian elixir, which was given to the sick. The stone was also used as an ointment to treat injuries and wounds.
