AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Halle, H. Bauer, 1909. 8vo (23.7 x 17 cm). xvii, 465, 24 pp.; 224 text illustrations, 21 plates, 20 examples of marbled paper tipped in. Early 20th-century full morocco. Spine with five raised bands; compartments with gilt geometric patterns and morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers with gilt-ornamented red morocco borders. Gilt, red, white and black ornamental edges.
* A wonderful "ode to bookbinding". This work is often found in simple bindings, and often shows signs of heavy use. This copy, however, takes theory to practice and comes in an exquisite red morocco binding, showing superior craftmanship. The edges, especially, are quite unusual, as they show various types of bookbinder's tools. Inscribed by a former owner in the top margin of the half-title, S. J. Schuring, i.e., bookbinder Leendert Jacobus Schuring (1889-1947) from The Hague. Spine and part of the rear board a bit sunned, a few plate margins a bit foxed and one with a short, repaired tear; otherwise in pristine condition. A very desirable copy.
