Description from the seller
South Indian wood relief depicting Varaha (Vishnu's avatar)
Expressive South Indian high relief depicts Varaha, the boar avatar of the god Vishnu. The figure shows the characteristic combination of a human body and boar head, adorned with typical Vishnu attire, including a belt, multiple layered necklaces, and richly decorated garment folds.
The raised hand in Abhaya-Mudra (gesture of protection) as well as the attribute held to the side emphasize the iconographic affiliation with Vishnu. The figure stands on a stylized lotus plinth, as is commonly used in South Indian temple architecture.
The patinated surface, drying cracks, and craftsmanship give the piece an authentic historical character.
