Diego Velázquez. 50 plates after his most famous works [66/500], illustrated by Paul Lafond.
Description from the seller
Monumental folio-format publication devoted to Velazquez, adorned with 50 plates reproducing his most famous works, kept mainly at the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Imperial Gallery in Vienna, or the National Gallery in London.
Beautiful black and white reproductions, printed on coated paper and mounted. The work is divided into 5 booklets of 10 double-page plates (with printed captions), in a cardboard folder with ties.
Limited edition print run, only 500 numbered copies, this is number 66.
Preceded by an introduction by Paul Lafond (1847-1918), art historian and curator of the Museum of Fine Arts of Pau.
Condition: boards in excellent condition, tears at the ends of two bits, slight handling marks on the cover, broken laces. Very good overall condition.
"Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), a painter of the Spanish Golden Age, is generally considered, along with Francisco Goya and El Greco, as one of the greatest artists in Spanish history. His style, while remaining highly personal, is firmly rooted in the Baroque movement of that period. His two trips to Italy had a decisive effect on the evolution of his work. Diego Velázquez is the author of numerous portraits depicting the Spanish royal family, prominent European figures, and ordinary people—peasants, weavers, water carriers, dwarves—but he is also the author of mythological and religious compositions."
