Vatican City issued a 2 euro commemorative coin in 2023 to mark the V Centenary of the Death of Pietro Perugino (Pietro Vannucci, c. 1446–1523), a renowned Italian High Renaissance painter.
Coin Features:
National Side (Obverse): The design, by Daniela Fusco, features a portrait of Perugino in profile, inspired by his self-portrait in a fresco at the Collegio del Cambio in Perugia. The portrait is juxtaposed with a detail from his fresco "The Baptism of Christ" in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
Inscriptions and Symbols:
The inscription "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" (Vatican City) is engraved in a semicircle at the top right.
At the bottom is the artist's name "PERUGINO" and, below that, the dates "1523◦2023".
The mintmark "R" (for Rome) is on the left.
The coin's outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
Common Side (Reverse): The reverse features the standard geographical map of Western Europe and the denomination "2 EURO", common to all euro coins.
