Table lamp 'Champiñón' in gilded brass, in the Art Deco style, dating from the 1930s.
Description from the seller
‘Mushroom’ table lamp, gilded brass, Claude-Paz Et Silva, Art Deco, 1930s – France
Iconic Art Deco table or desk lamp by the firm Claude-Paz Et Silva, model 'Champiñón,' manufactured in the 1930s, with finishes in gold brass and copper. The model's name reflects its structure, which consists of a chrome round base from which three rods emerge (among which the switch is located) supporting the dome-shaped or mushroom-shaped shade. Beneath it, a frosted pressed glass diffuser bears the brand's signature.
Claude-Paz Et Silva
The company Claude-Paz Et Silva was founded in 1933. It resulted from the merger of Claude Lumière, founded in 1930 by his nephews Georges (1870-1960) and André Claude (1900-1950), and Paz & Silva, founded in 1900. André Claude took over as the company's president. They manufactured household appliances and advertising signs with neon lights, processes patented by Georges Claude, the inventor of neon light. The company was acquired by JC Decaux, now renowned for its billboard advertising.
In 1956, the company merged with Visseaux to form Claude Paz & Visseaux. The company's full name remains 'Claude Paz & Visseaux', but the logo is simply abbreviated as 'Claude'. Viseaux was founded in 1900 by Jacques Visseaux (1872-1952), who specialized in manufacturing gas lighting equipment.
In 1966, it was acquired by the American group ITT (International Telephone & Telegraph), and in 1980 by the GTE group (General Telephone & Electronics Corporation); after 1993, it was acquired by SLI France (Sylvania Lighting International France).
The Art Deco
The term Art Deco was defined in the 1960s to refer to the art produced during the interwar period. It was a style that developed across all facets of design and reached its peak at the International Exposition of Decorative Arts in Paris (1925). Art Deco is characterized by the use of straight lines and geometric volumes; it emerged from the combination of various trends. Some of the major influences on Art Deco include avant-garde art, mechanization, and archaeological discoveries from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It differs from other artistic periods by being a purely decorative style, where artists focused on creating attractive and balanced pieces that reflected the society of the time.
