Description from the seller
A fine Bronze Age bronze spearhead featuring a leaf-shaped blade and a long tang. The blade features upwards-sloping shoulders and a prominent central midrib. The stem is long and rounded, flaring at the base. Beneath, a long square-sectioned tang develops, starting to curve at the base, which would have flared to a wide, flat end that has now chipped and is missing. Patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age such as chips to the edges of the blade.
Excavated items most often included weapons, tools, vessels and finials, but ornamental pieces such as amulets, fittings and jewellery such as pins or bracelets also feature in the material record. Early models of spearheads were designed looking like flat dagger-like blade with a thin tang which would be used to attach the metal head to a wooden shaft and be tied to the body. Later designs, such as this one, would evolve to provide side support which would allow a more secure attachment to the weapon.
Measurements: (circa) L 38.2cm x W 2.8cm
Provenance: Ex London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
