Bronze zoomorphic finial from the Near Eastern culture, dating to circa 12th–10th century BC, in good condition, measuring 1.9 cm long by 1.7 cm high, with provenance from the Ex SM London collection (acquired 1970–1999) and private collection.
Description from the seller
A finely cast Near Eastern bronze finial, modelled in the form of a zoomorphic figure's bust. The animal features a rounded head with a triangular mouth. Detailed incisions depict the eyes and lips. To the rear, there is a small protrusion which represent the tail. The bust terminates in an oval base, from which a perpendicular suspension loop extends downwards; however, its bottom is chipped off and now missing. Patination and earthly encrustations to the surface.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Animals are a recurring motif in Bronze Age art and metalwork.
Measurements: L 1.9cm x H 1.7cm
Provenance: Ex SM London collection, acquired 1970-99.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
