Description from the seller
Weems & Plath Professional Drum Sextant – 1979 – Excellent condition – From LNG tanker Virgo, known for rescuing Vietnamese boat refugees
For sale is a rare, well-preserved Weems & Plath drum sextant with the original certificate from 1979. The instrument is in fully functional condition and is ready for navigation use.
This sextant comes from the LNG tanker Virgo, an American ship that gained international fame for rescuing Vietnamese boat refugees in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The crew of the Virgo rescued refugees at sea on several occasions, which received worldwide attention at the time. Information about these rescue operations is well documented online and makes the origin of this instrument historically significant.
This was the captain's personal sextant of the Virgo. The sextant has never been used by students or cadets and has always been carefully maintained. Its excellent condition clearly reflects that.
Photos of the ship will be added to the auction.
